Estimating Ultimate Shear Strength from Ultimate Tensile Strength of Aluminum and its Alloys for Blanking or Piercing

In pressworking, large forces cut or deform a material, and specific shearing processes include blanking piercing of metals, including aluminum. The force requirement is directly proportional to the ultimate shear strength, USS, sheared material. Nevertheless, strengths are not readily found in engineering references, especially for multitude aluminum grades tempers. Thus, USS often estimated from some percentage tensile strength. However, analyses these estimates lacking, it clear how accurately predicted. this review 197 alloy data, shown that 60% strength provides satisfactory estimation as predicted is, on average, within 5.5% actual value. weaker grades, well all annealed tends be underestimated while strongest overestimated. availability reliable data makes more efficient pressworking.
